THREE LEGENDARY ROUNDS.

July 9, 2011- Not dissapointing whatsoever, the expected war between WBA Lightweight champion Barndon ''Bam Bam'' Rios 28-0-1, 20 KOs and Urbano Antillon 28-3, 20 KOs took place for three, now classic rounds at the Home Depot Center in Carson California on Saturday night in front of a vociferous crowd with TOP RANK promoting and SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING televising.

Oxnard California's Rios and Maywood California's Antillon, no love-lost between them did not mess around with any kind of feeling-out process, choosing to engage in a furious, non-stop attack on the inside from the onset, with big contingents of supporter's a piece yelling at the top of their lungs from the stands.

A hooking-fest with big shots landed to the body, followed up by uppercuts by Antillon found their target early and often, with Rios firing back without giving any ground.

The same furious action took place in the second round, with a slight reddening of the face taking place on the challenger, both men ended up the round face-to-face as if aknowledgement of their efforts thus far to the crowd's delight.

Disaster struck for Antillon in the thrid round, as both men kept the war going, with Antillon getting caught by a huge left hook to the head during an exchange which sent the fighter to the ground.

Perhaps getting up too quickly, Antillon was allowed to keep fighting, with his corner yelling to box and hold, Antillon chose to fight-it out, incredibly looked to have turned the fight around, punching it out with the champion, before another Rios bomb exploded on his head sending him down once more.

Antillon got up, with Rios jumping on him and pinning him against the ropes, with rubbery legs and trying to shake off the effects, Antillon finally chose to try and hold, freeing himself Rios kept trying to punch, Antillon's legs betrayed him, stumbled to his corner, with the referee David Mendoza chosing to stop the thriller at 2:49 of the round.

Rios said he would like to have any of the top names next after the fight.

Antillon would also add after the fight- “Soto’s a great champion but is much better defensively. This guy Rios is much physically stronger than Soto and a bigger puncher.”
Abel Sanchez, Antillon's trainer would add- “The first knockdown did all the damage,”  “That left hook was a devastating punch and took it out of him. The rest was an accumulation of punches.”

Brandon Rios (wearing cap) and challenger Urbano Antillon had to be restrained following one last heated verbal exchange Friday after making weight and are set to go tomorrow, Saturday, July 9, live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

In what most expect will be a can't miss candidate for Fight of the Year, the unbeaten Rios (27-0-1, 19 KOs) will defend his WBA lightweight championship against Antillon (28-2, 20 KOs) in the highly anticipated main event on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

Cintron weighed 149 1/4 pounds on Friday; Molina weighed 151 3/4.

FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Wilshire Grand Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING Doubleheader This Saturday, July 9, At The Home Depot Center, Carson, California, Live on SHOWTIME® at 10 p.m. ET/PT

LOS ANGELES (July 6, 2011) – Aside from some one-on-one, in-your-face jawing during a face-off for photographers, both Brandon “Bam Bam’’ Rios and Urbano Antillon were well-behaved and civil to each other during Wednesday’s final press conference for their highly anticipated world title fight this Saturday, July 9, live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Rios and Antillon had spent weeks jawing, and at one point the heated verbal exchanges nearly caused them to come to blows, but Wednesday at Wilshire Grand Los Angeles their focus solo was on Saturday when Rios (27-0-1, 19 KOs), of Oxnard, Calif., defends his World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight championship against Antillon (28-2, 20 KOs), of Maywood, Calif., in the main event on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

In the Top Rank-promoted co-feature at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (32-3-1, 28 KOs), of Carolina, Puerto Rico, makes his first start in more than a year against Mexico’s Carlos Molina (18-4-2, 6 KOs), of Chicago, in a 10-round junior middleweight match.

The SHOWTIME telecast also will include highlights from overseas as IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (28-0, 23 KOs) defends his title for an eighth time – but first in his home country of Romania – against mandatory challenger Jean-Paul Mendy (29-0-1, 16 KOs) of France.

In top undercard, non-televised fights at The Home Depot Center, unbeaten, No, 2-ranked World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight contender Mercito Gesta (21-0-1, 11 KOs), of Cebu, Philippines, meets had-hitting Jorge “El Tigre” Pimental (23-11, 17 KOs) of Sonora, Mex., undefeated former Notre Dame champion Mike Lee (5-0, 3 KOs) of Chicago takes on Michael Birthmark (2-5, 0 KOs) of Billings, Montana, in a light heavyweight bout and promising super bantamweight Gabino Saenz (3-0, 3 KOs), of Indio, Calif., will try to maintain his unblemished record against Quinice Wesby (1-1, 0 KOs) of Dallas.

Tickets, priced at $125, $75, $50 and $25, are available at all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.Ticketmaster.com as well as The Home Depot Center Box Office (Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Suites are available by calling (877) 604-8777. The first live, non-televised fight Saturday starts at 4:05 p.m. PT. Doors open at 4.

What they said Wednesday:

PROMOTER BOB ARUM

“This is the fight that the fans want to see. A very limited number of tickets are still available and we are expecting a sellout. So get your tickets now.

“This is a fight that the casual fan will see and want to get back into boxing as real fans. This is the kind of fight that makes the casual fan a real fan of boxing. This is the kind of fight where they see that there is no other sport in the world as exciting as boxing.

“Kermit Cintron got a bad rap for what happened against Paul Williams. It was another typical media assassination. He was on his way to beating Williams and then somehow it gets written up that he gets tripped up and flies out of the ring like Superman and didn’t come back. That’s not what happened.

“There’s nothing in boxing like the passion involved in a neighborhood war. Unlike what I was used to in New York where we had distinct neighborhoods, here we have areas in Southern California which really have replaced neighborhoods. We have Maywood against Oxnard and people have been talking about this fight for a long, long time.”

BRANDON RIOS:

“I am 100 percent and they say they are a 100 percent so that equals a big force that’s going to be in the ring.

“It’s not just SHOWTIME now, it is war time. There will be no boxing on Saturday night. We are both brawlers who will try to beat the crap out of each other. Our skills are pretty much the same, no skill … just your typical street fight.

“For the first time in my life I’m actually going to make weight days before the weigh-in. I can’t believe it. It’s because I’m working with my new strength and conditioning coach Henry Castro. He’s been working my butt off.”

ROBERT GARCIA (Rios’ Trainer):

“We are just days away and we can’t wait for Saturday night. All the work has been done. Brandon’s never been in better shape and has never worked as hard for a fight.

“We have a world title to defend here. This is serious business so there’s no more messing around.

“I can’t wait. I’m so excited, just like Brandon is for Saturday night.”

URBANO ANTILLON:

“The moment is almost here and it’s a day I’ve been waiting for for awhile. We are both tough fighters and we want to leave it all out in the ring and that’s what we’re going to do.

“We are two guys who come forward and that’s what we’re going to do on Saturday night. We will both impose our will and someone will get broken down.

“This is a pivotal fight for me, one of the biggest of my career. This is the goal I’ve always had for myself, to be fighting the best there is.”

ABEL SANCHEZ (Antillon’s Trainer):

“I think it’s time for all the talking to stop and to get these boys in the ring to settle this.

“We’ve had a great training camp and so has Robert’s guy. This is my fourth camp with Urbano and he’s finally gotten it – finally bought into the system. We totally changed his method of training. In the Soto fight he was tentative and not that confident. You could tell. And he was two pounds overweight at the weigh-in. Now there are no problems and we are ready to go.”

KERMIT CINTRON

“It’s a great opportunity for me to be fighting for Top Rank and I thank them, my team, SHOWTIME, and everyone involved for making this fight happen. I’ve been waiting for my moment to shine and this is it.

“This is my first fight in 14 months and I’m ready to go. I’ve trained very hard. I think the time off did me good. Spending time with my family and kids did wonders for me and it gave my body a break. I’m re-energized and feel like I did before I took the time off.

“There is no pressure on me, but I’m actually looking to win the fight impressively. I know Molina pretty well. He helped me get ready for the second fight with Antonio Margarito and he gave me good work. Carlos is a crafty fighter who comes to win. I expect him to give it his all, and I’ll be ready for anything he brings. This is going to be a great fight.

“If everything goes OK on Saturday, my next fight will be back down at 147 pounds.’’

RONNIE SHIELDS (Cintron’s Trainer)

“Molina is a good fighter and a tough opponent, which is what Kermit needs. But we had a great camp, Kermit trained hard and he is ready.

“I’ve been asked a lot why we’re fighting such a tough guy after a year-plus layoff and the reason is that Kermit is one of the best fighters in the world.

“He knows Molina and I’d rather have Kermit fight someone that he knows is going to be tough rather than fight some guy he doesn’t know and maybe won’t work and train so hard for. If Kermit respects you, he’ll work his butt off, which is what he’s done for Molina.

“We wanted someone who would bring out the best in Kermit.’’

CARLOS MOLINA

"Everyone who knows me knows that I come to fight and that I will always give my best in the ring. This is a good opportunity and I’m going to try to win all the way. I’ve been in some very close fights with some very good fighters so I have the experience to fight a guy with the experience of Cintron.

“I want to thank Top Rank and Bob Arum. I’m ready to go and put up a helluva fight.’’

GABINO SAENZ

“I’m very excited to be fighting for Top Rank and looking forward to a good fight on Saturday. I don’t know much about my opponent but I fought in enough tournaments during the amateurs to know how to deal with the unknown. I’ll just fight my fight and adapt when I have to.

“To be able to sign with Top Rank is as good as it gets. They are the biggest promoter out there and they know how to move a fighter and help us make a name for ourselves. I’m hoping for a good performance on Saturday and looking forward to fighting on a lot of their shows. I’ll fight anybody they tell me to.’’

MIKE LEE

"I want to thank Top Rank for this fight and I’m excited to be fighting on this card. I’m looking forward to showing the kinds of skills we’ve been working on in camp.

“I really want to thank my team. They are the reason I’m standing here at this press conference and they are the reason why I’m undefeated.’’

In the co-feature on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, former IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (32-3-1, 28 KOs) will take on Mexico’s Carlos Molina (18-4-2, 6 KOs) in a 10-round junior middleweight scrap.

BRANDON RIOS AND URBANO ANTILLON RUMBLE FOR WORLD LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE

Saturday, July 9, at The Home Depot Center Live on SHOWTIME®

Tickets Now On Sale!

LOS ANGELES (May 31, 2011) – Undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champion “Bam Bam” BRANDON RIOS will make the first defense of his world title when he takes on two-time world title challenger and current Top-Five-rated contender URBANO ANTILLO, Saturday, July 9, at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The co-main event will feature former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion KERMIT CINTRON and CARLOS MOLINA in a 10-round super welterweight fight. Both bouts will be televised live on SHOWTIME®, beginning at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast.)

The four warriors have a combined record of 105-9-4 (73 KOs) – a winning percentage of 89% and a victory by knockout ratio of 70%.

The SHOWTIME Championship Boxing telecast will also include highlights from overseas as IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (28-0, 23 KOs), defends his title for the eighth time – but first in his home country of Romania – against mandatory challenger Jean-Paul Mendy (29-0-1, 16 KOs), from France.

Promoted by Top Rank, tickets for The Home Depot Center’s Rios vs. Antillon World Lightweight Championship fight card, priced at $125, $75, $50 and $25, are now on sale! They can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.Ticketmaster.com as well as The Home Depot Center Box Office (open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Suites are available by calling 1-877-604-8777.

Rios (27-0-1, 19 KOs), a native of Lubbock, Tex., now fights out of Oxnard, Calif. Arguably the division’s most exciting fighter, he returns to the ring on the heels of his biggest professional victory, a 10th round TKO of defending champion Miguel Acosta, on February 26, to capture the WBA lightweight title. An all-action fan-friendly fighter, Rios, who is trained by former IBF junior lightweight champion Robert Garcia, possesses a self-described “throwback” style and a warrior’s mentality that screams excitement as proven by the fact that eight of his previous nine victories have been by knockout. Highlights of that streak include victories, all inside the distance, over Acosta (28-3-2), Anthony Peterson (30-0), Jorge Teron (23-1-1) and Omri Lowther (14-2), who had a combined record of 95-6-3 when they were defeated by Rios.

Antillon (28-2, 20 KOs), of Maywood, Calif., has given sensational performances in recent fights, most notably his last one, against World Boxing Council lightweight champion Humberto Soto last December, the consensus “Fight of the Year.” Though he lost to Soto by one point on two of the judges’ cards due to a controversial point deduction by the referee, Antillon emerged from that fight a certified world-class contender. Trained by Abel Sanchez, 10 of Antillon’s last 11 victories have been by knockout. Notable scalps hanging from Antillon’s belt include Rene Gonzalez (27-1-1), Tyrone Harris (23-4), former world title challenger Daniel Attah (24-4-1), and Bobby Pacquiao (28-13-3), the younger brother of Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao.

Cintron (32-3-1, 28 KOs), of Carolina, Puerto Rico, captured the IBF welterweight title in 2006 by knocking out Mark Suarez in the fifth round. He held the title for close to two years, successfully defending it against Walter Matthysse and Jesse Feliciano, both by knockout, before losing it to Antonio Margarito in 2008. Since moving up in weight in 2009 Cintron has become a force in the superr welterweight division where he is still the only man to defeat top-rated contender Alfredo Angulo. He also boasts a Draw against 2010 Fighter of the Year and World Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez.

Molina (18-4-2, 6 KOs), a native of Michoacán, México, who fights out of Chicago, enters this fight riding a three-year, 11-bout unbeaten streak. In 2011 he knocked out Allen Conyers (12-4) in the seventh round and had a 10-round Draw against undefeated contender Erislandy Lara (15-0). Other highlights of Molina’s unbeaten streak include an NABO junior middleweight title victory over Danny Perez (34-5), and 10-round decision victories over Ed Paredes (21-2), and Alexis Camacho (17-1).

TOP RANK'S Bob Arum was so pleased with what many are calling the fight of the year/candidate for fight of the year- ANTILLON VS SOTO WBC LIGHTWEIGHT BOUT which took place on December 4th at The Honda Center in Anaheim Califorina, that although Antillon found himself not taking the belt home on that particular night, Arum will get Antillon back in the title picture right away.

According to an interview given to Maxboxing.com's teve Kim and posted on Monday December 6th, Arum stated the following..

"Here’s what we’re looking at," Arum told Maxboxing on Monday afternoon. "There’s no way that Soto will be able to go February 26th. So we have that date; so what we’re thinking about is to put Rios in with either Miguel Vazquez or Miguel Acosta and then do the rematch [between Soto and Antillon]. If we don’t get a spot on the network because it was only the ‘Fight of the Year’ and they don’t want to go near ’Fights of the Year’ because that would ruin their reputation. So what our plan would be then is to take that fight and put in on the Manny Pacquiao pay-per-view in April." for the full piece (at the bottom of that particular webpage) click HERE

Soto Goes Through Hell to Retain Title In Close Bout Against Game Antillon.

Photo: German Villasenor.

By Francisco Villasenor.

December 4th, 2010- Taking center stage, following the pull-out of J.C.Chavez Jr. in the main event of the Top Rank PPV, Urbano Antillon 28-2, 20KOs went to war against defending WBC Lightweight champion Humberto ''La Zorrita'' Soto 54-7-2-1, 32KOs in the main event on Saturday night at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

The fight began with all action, trading of uppercuts by both fighters and Antillon advancing, setting up good body shots, looking to take Soto's legs away early in the fight.

Soto got his rhythm going in the following rounds, throwing beautiful, accurate combinations and working on Urbano's body at the same time as both men traded furiously in high action exchanges.

Antillon strayed low on occasions, something which would come back to cost him dearly in the scorecards, as a dubious low blow cost him a point off in the fifth frame.

Antillon tried to make up for the point deduction, going forward, pressing the action, before Soto sent a barrage of shots Antillon's way late in the round, trying to get the tempo back his way.

Antillon came back very strong again in the sixth round, despite being bothered by blood flowing down from a cut above his eye due to a earlier accidental head butt, the Mayweather California fighter dug hard to the body, threw a very good head-snapping jab, with Soto taking control of the bout in the following frame, using good angles, uppercuts and two-three punch combos in the round.

Antillon would wrestle the seemingly wearing down Soto leading into the championship rounds, with Soto coming back time and again from hard body shots to stand his ground against Antillon, who did his best work on the inside in a grueling, uppercut-fest.

Both pugilists stood their ground in the last two rounds, knowing it could go either way, with the lively crowd (most behind Antillon) going nuts at the bell.
After a tense few minutes, the scorecards came back, 114-113 115-112 114-113 for Humberto Soto unanimous decision.

The deciding factor became the point loss for the low blow called by referee Ray Corona, in what would have otherwise ended up as a draw.

German Antillon, Urbano's brother and manager, stated that he felt the point deduction was erroneous, and pending video review, he would put in a formal complaint regarding it, as the fight would have been a draw as stated before.

In the co-feature bout, Philipino raising star, shot up way high, with a career -best, per his own admission devastation over the hardened Vladimir Sidorenko in four rounds, in what was Donaire's debut in the bantamweight ranks.

The southpaw Donaire 25-1, 17KOs, a former Flyweight champion dropped Sidorenko with a clean right hand in the first round, busting up the latter's face up.

Nonito did further damage in the 2nd round from the now very bloody Vladimir, tagging him again with a quick snappy left with 54 seconds to go in the 3rd round put him down on the canvas and a bloody stream pouring out of his nose.

The Referee put a stoppage to the bout, following another fall by the Russian at 1:48 of the fourth frame.

Oxnard California's Featherweight MIGUEL ANGEL ''Mickey'' GARCIA (24-0, 20 KOs) controlled and dropped Montreal, Canada's OLIVIER LONTCHI (18-2-2, 8 KOs) twice in the fifth round, with Lontchi failing to recover, with the fight being stopped at 1:30 into the round.

In the first bout of the PPV televised portion of the fight card, J.C.Chavez's opponent, brought in after the original fighter, Alfonso Gomez became I;; and pulled out last week out of the card, middleweight Pawel Wolak 28-1, 17KOs went down hard in the first round, courtesy of a head shot delivered by the very tall, lanky, Mexico's Jose Pinzon 19-2-1 (12KOs)
Pinzon tried to go for the finish, wit Wolak surviving the onslaught, and pressing back, it became evident that Pinzon had no defense, no side movement and other than his early aggressiveness, was unable to turn the fight around, with Wolak scoring a TKO with 34 seconds to go into the seventh frame.

Time of the stoppage was 2:24.
